Over the years we have witnessed a couple royal weddings. While recently viewing another royal wedding, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to belong to a royal family.
After all royalty is the highest possible class, the uppermost of the upper class. Truly the lives of royalty are very privileged. Also bear in mind, to be part of a royal family is to be born or marry into it. In other words, a very limited and selective few.
Now let’s consider some of the privileges handed over to a royal family. For starters, a royal family has wealth beyond measure. Next they have immunity (sovereign immunity) from the law, which means they are immune from a civil suit or criminal prosecution.
Then there is the love and admiration from the public. Whether it be the fairytale aspect of a royal family or their celebrity status, the public adoringly swoons over them.
Ultimately the question becomes, “In the grand scheme of things,” and what I mean is in view of eternity, is a royal family really privileged?” On the contrary their privileged life does not gain them a royal entrance into the “Pearly Gates.”
“Opening his mouth, Peter said: I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation, the one fearing Him and working righteousness is acceptable to Him” (Acts 10:34-35).
The good news is those of us born of the Spirit belong to the royal family of God. Subsequently, God’s invitation into His royal family is an open invitation for all, not just a selective few. Thus we certainly don’t have to be born into it.
“That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7).
Although an earthly royal family has great wealth, we as believers know that true riches do not consist of material things. We are rich in grace through the forgiveness of our sins. Also, God’s grace extends to us throughout eternity.
Additionally, there are the riches of His glory (Ephesians 3:16) as well as the riches of His wisdom and knowledge (Romans 11:33), and lastly the riches of His goodness and forbearance and long-suffering (Romans 2:4).
Earlier I mentioned the privilege of sovereign immunity which applies to a royal family. On the other hand Christians experience a different kind of sovereign immunity, that is exemption from their sins. We will never be held accountable or punished for our sins which we so rightly deserve. Our immunity from sin extends into eternity.
Needless to say most Christians today are not loved and admired by the public. However, we experience the love of God. And God’s love is unchanging, steadfast, unfailing, forgiving, merciful, gracious, and endures forever. The list is quite exhaustive really but the point is God’s love surrounds us everyday.
Now the crown of a believer is distinguished from these earthly crowns in that it is “incorruptible” (1 Corinthians 9: 25). Now what about the crowns of a royal family?
A crown is a traditional form of headwear worn by a monarch. In the UK there are several crowns, which serve different roles. The crowns represent power, legitimacy, victory, triumph, honor, and glory.
More importantly though, what can the royal crowns do for the royals? In essence these earthly crowns serve them no purpose in the life hereafter.
The Bible says that crowns will be given when we reach heaven. Some crowns will be rewards for the service we’ve rendered to the Lord on earth. Subsequently, there are a couple of crowns promised to all believers.
First is the “Crown of Righteousness.” We inherit this crown through the righteousness of Christ. This crown is not for those who depend upon their own sense of righteousness. It is an everlasting crown promised to those who love the Lord and eagerly wait for His return (2 Timothy 4:8).
Next is the crown of life. This particular crown is for those who have persevered, endured trials, and even faced death, and yet still remain faithful (James 1:12). This crown is also for all believers.
“Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7).
Speaking of royal weddings; no wedding can hold a candle to the wedding that is to take place which is spoken of in Revelation 19:7. Christ will be the Bridegroom and the church his bride. Our union will be complete in heaven.
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people” (1 Peter 2:9a). We belong to God’s royal family.
However, the full realization of our royal and kingly status is as yet future. Furthermore, we belong to God and are of special value to Him.
At first glance an earthly royal family may appear to have an enviable lifestyle. Truth be told it is all “dust in the wind.” Yet the privileges of those that belong to Christ are everlasting and to be sought after wholeheartedly.

That’s a great thought Liz. Teaching children that belonging to God’s royal family makes them special. God Bless!
