Christian people from many corners of my life are conveying the same thoughts and feelings. We yearn for the return of Jesus. With longing anticipation we are waiting for His return.
“Do return, O Lord; how long will it be” (Psalm 90:13)? Is this the cry of your heart? It certainly is mine.
When one considers the signs of the times, we look forward to the return of Jesus. But what seems to be really grabbing our attention these days is sign upon sign. In other words, the signs appear to be moving with great speed.
In this context, we see the turmoil taking place in the world around us. Evil has become mainstream. Hate and violence seem to dominate the culture of today. We can clearly see the lawlessness in our communities, and how the love of man’s heart has grown cold (Matthew 24:12). In fact, just listening to the nightly news brings to mind many of the heart conditions described in the Bible when referring to the last days (2Timothy 3:1-4).
Today we are also witnessing the persecution of the Christian church around the world. This certainly resembles first century Christianity, when Christians were persecuted under Roman emperors, but this is happening today and the similarities are alarming. At the same time, in this nation, we are getting a glimpse of the beginning stages of the persecution of Christians. A nation that was founded upon Christian principles.
When one considers the signs of the times, weariness and discouragement can set in. As for our weariness, Jesus said, “Come to Me all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Meanwhile, Christians in many circles are having discussions about these perilous times and the return of Jesus. We wonder if His return will be soon, or in our lifetimes. Do you recall what Jesus said in the gospel of Mark? “But of that day or hour no one knows “ (Mark 13:32a).
We are waiting for the return of Jesus, and watching the signs.
I am reminded that this is a good thing. God wants us to have a sense of urgency and expectancy.
But we may say, “Why has He not yet returned?” A fundamental truth is God’s timetable is definitely not ours. The scripture says, “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2Peter 3:8).
More importantly, God is still doing a work in this world; His world I might add. He has extended His gospel of grace to a dying world and He is waiting. “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
While waiting for the return of Jesus:
- Let’s be aware of the signs of the times. “Straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Matthew 21:28b)
- Rid ourselves of the world. “But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ” (Philippians 3:7).
- Sanctify our hearts and lives. “Be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless” (2Peter 3:14b).
- Pray that we remain strong in our faith. “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
- Be a light shining in a dark place. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
- Let’s use our gift or talent for the Lord’s work. “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
Although the world seems to be spinning out of control, the King of Kings is in control and sits on the throne. We are waiting for the return of Jesus. Things are going according to His plan.
I would like to say,
Just before I leave you,
I’ll be back someday,
And with Me I will take you
So do not be afraid,
Only watch and pray,
And wait for My return.
I’ve done what I must do,
My work here is completed,
It’s all been done for you,
Believe what I have stated,
And I will give you peace
Through all your tribulations,
Until I come again.
Chorus:
Please know that I love you,
I’ll stay by your side.
If only now in Spirit,
I’ll still be your guide.
You will not suffer long,
For I have suffered for you,
I love you with My life.
I’ll prepare a place
Where we can live together,
I’ll meet you face to face,
To share our new forever.
Don’t let your love grow cold,
And I will not allow
What’s more than you can bear.
Chorus:
Love you with My life.

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1).
