During the course of this historic election cycle I’ve learned about a new disorder. It’s called election stress disorder, or ESD. Apparently ESD has smitten many well meaning American patriots, Christians included. This may seem comical to some. But nevertheless, it is true. The reason being, this country has imposed election mayhem upon us for well over a year.
As a result there are rifts between family members, co-workers, friends, and people with different racial backgrounds. Not to mention physical assaults, and all manner of illegal activities in view of this election. Add to that the political rants (many mean spirited) all over social media and the internet.
“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10a). How do we deal with this never ending onslaught of election mayhem?
To begin with there are many references in the scriptures that allude to the peace of God. Psalm 46:10 refers to this inner peace very clearly and simply. To be still means calm down, to let go, and quiet our minds.
This may be tough with all the media drama. Perhaps for starters, we can turn off and unplug our electronic devices. Information is good but not an overload of negativity.
Next we can pray and claim God’s promises. Then wait. With that being said we as citizens need to take our civic duty seriously and vote. The importance of voting in this election is very clear and cannot be overestimated.
“For God has not given us the spirit of fear” (2 Timothy 1:7a).
Many of us fear the outcome of this election may not be in our favor, or best interests. The dismal truth is “the powers that be” have been unmasked, and it is not a pretty picture. I must admit I’ve had a roller coaster ride of emotions with all the election mayhem. But if we believers are fearful, it does not come from God.
“I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10b).
Do not panic, recognize God’s sovereignty. God reigns supreme over the nation and the earth. If we believe He is sovereign we can surrender to His plan. Also, if we truly believe He is sovereign, this should be a comfort to us.
“My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all my good pleasure” (Isaiah 46:10b). Remember, He’s got the whole world in His hands.
You may be asking, “Is God really in control and what is the sovereignty of God”? In essence, the sovereignty of God is the control of God over everything. Control over every person and every living being. Also, control over every circumstance in history.
All that takes place is either caused, or allowed by Him. No one and no single thing can stand in God’s way. His purposes will be carried out.
“The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior” (Zephaniah 3:17a).
To sum up, let us not forget that God gives us assurances throughout His word that His cause is victorious. Furthermore, He is in our midst. “If God be for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31)?
Thus, every fear can be silenced, every anxiety put to rest. His people can relax. He is God.
Clearly this election mayhem has been a wild ride for many of us. But hold onto your seat folks we may be on this roller coaster ride for sometime.

Aida,
The mayhem of this election, including the hidden information being let out from various sources about the candidates has a way of afflicting ESD . It has caused some anxiety in me. No matter what, I need to stay close and focused on the Lord and His Word. His lovingkindness..and peace will not be shaken from us… (Isa.54:10). Thanks for this article.
